When we set out to feature a partner who truly embodies what creative technology can be, 3e8 was an easy choice.
Based in Berlin and Vienna, 3e8 is a studio for digital art, interactive exhibitions and creative technology-driven productions. Their interdisciplinary team covers creative technology, software and web development, interaction design, scenography, motion and sound design. Beyond client work for curators, agencies and cultural institutions, 3e8 also cultivates its own artistic practice in AV performances, data visualizations and political activism.
If you‘re ever in Vienna and want to experience one of our products and the Scape X® technology, feel free to reach out to them for a demo - they don‘t bite!
From October 2023 to March 2025, 3e8 received funding from Wirtschaftsagentur Wien (Vienna Business Agency) to build a toolkit of nine vvvv libraries for their project work. The toolkit covers:
Alongside the library development, the funding also included four media art projects that they used to develop and evolve these libraries in practice.
It's a rare thing to see a studio invest this deeply in its own infrastructure. Most studios build for the project in front of them, 3e8.studio builds for the next ten.
“We see our studio as a system in continuous refinement. All our libraries are versioned and maintained as a living knowledge base for our team. What we learn on every project flows back into the libraries, making each subsequent build faster, more robust, and more capable.” - Christoph Ignaz Kirmaier (Founder of 3e8)

At the heart of their multitouch work lies VL.Kit, a flexible interface for programming multitouch displays in vvvv. Anyone who has ever developed multitouch applications in vvvv will be familiar with the core challenge: when a touch input hits a UI element, it tends to propagate down through all the layers beneath it. VL.Kit solves this issue. It automatically handles occluded elements, supports custom UI elements with path layers, and is optimized for complex scenarios with up to 100 simultaneous touch inputs. The result is a stable, expressive foundation for building interfaces.
3e8 presented VL.Kit at the Interactive Scape Partner Summit 2024, showcasing the results of a year of focused R&D and establishing the studio as a vvvv expert within the Interactive Scape partner network. Theirs was one of the presentations that stuck with us, a live demonstration of what happens when deep technical expertise meets a genuine artistic vision.
Alongside the library, they also presented Bewegte Orte, an interactive media installation that brought VL.Kit to life in a real project context and and served as a live demonstration of what the toolkit makes possible.
For vvvv developers, integrating Scape X® object recognition and Scape X® Mobile is straightforward: with our VL.TUIO library for vvvv gamma you can receive TUIO 1.1/2.0 events and start Scape X® Mobile sessions (smartphones as tangibles) directly in your patches and map them to your own interaction logic. The library is built on top of TuioNet and supports both UDP and WebSocket, so you can flexibly connect to our displays, modules and mobile scenarios. On our GitHub profile you will also find additional open-source building blocks like TuioNet, TuioUnityClient and tuio_client_js, forming a consistent ecosystem for TUIO-based multitouch and object interactions across different frameworks.
One of their four funded installations was Bewegte Orte (Moving Places), developed with media artist and climate activist Rosi Grillmair for the Klima Biennale Wien 2024 at the Volkskundemuseum Vienna. This interactive data visualization invited activists and visitors to share their feelings towards locations across Austria and reflect on whether those places had left an impact on them. These locations are linked to climate organizations, creating a snapshot of climate activism in Austria in 2024. Trends, contradictions and unexpected connections became visible, opening up space for reflection and discussion.

What we find particularly compelling about Bewegte Orte goes beyond the technology, it’s what it reveals about the values that drive 3e8.
"The funding gave us the opportunity to realize projects that align with our own artistic interests and political practice, something we deliberately hold onto alongside commercial work. Bewegte Orte was a direct application of our multitouch toolkit on the Scape X® ecosystem," says Christoph Ignaz Kirmaier, Founder of 3e8. "It's a reminder that the most powerful installations are built by studios who care deeply about what they're saying, not just how it works."
Following years of focused research and development, 3e8 is ready to incorporate this infrastructure to client projects, whether it's a museum exhibition, a brand showroom, a trade fair installation or a public space. The team has the necessary tools and the experience to build custom multitouch experiences on Scape X® hardware from the ground up.
If you're looking for a partner to handle the full process from interaction concept to vvvv development and final deployment, who brings both the technical depth and the creative ambition to make something truly memorable, get in touch with 3e8.
